Origin of Mother’s Day:
The celebration of mothers and motherhood dates back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, who staged festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, Mother's Day's clearest modern precursor is the early Christian holiday known as "Mothering Sunday."

Children would give their mothers flowers and other symbols of affection as part of the Mothering Sunday custom as it evolved into a more secular celebration.
